1940's F.A. Reynolds catalog

Jonathan Quine generously provided a digital copy of this catalog to the site. While reviewing the images, I noted the following details:

  • Catalog notes about the engraving options for the sterling silver bells explicitly mention the "monogram design", which was introduced in 1946 and replaced the original engraving style.
  • The artwork and typography is consistent with advertising examples from the mid-late 1940's -- specifically compare the French horn illustrations and "by F.A. Reynolds" setting on the cover to the 1946 "Masterpiece" print ad.
  • However, there is no mention of "Division of Scherl & Roth", which also began to appear on documented advertising and other materials in 1946, including the aforementioned "Masterpiece" ad.
  • There are no mentions of the initial Contempora models included in the other c.1949 catalog I've collected.
  • Model numbers are consistent with the later documentation.
  • Illustrations are of original instrument designs, with the standard (non-Olds) bracing on the trombones and "teardrop" valve caps on the trumpets and cornets.
  • Mouthpiece illustrations on the trumpet, cornet, and other instruments appear to be the fluted style design that was used in the late 1930's.
  • The striking blue color on the cover and throughout is consistent with the Ohio Band catalog design and contrasts with the yellows and golds more typically used by Scherl & Roth.

The back cover has a printed March 1949 date. Without the 1949 date printed on the back cover, I would have been comfortable dating this to c.1946-47 given the engraving references and design styles. It is likely that the same base catalog was used for multiple years and reprinted multiple times at different dates.
